YSZ Grinding Media

Description

YSZ (Yttria Stabilized Zirconia) grinding media feature high density, toughness, and super hardness, enabling them to achieve superior grinding efficiencies compared with other conventional grinding media such as Alumina and Agate. The high wear-resistant YSZ grinding media effectively eliminate product contamination and lengthen the service life of the grinder. These special features make YSZ grinding media especially suitable for sensitive products and critical applications. YSZ grinding media are widely used for high viscosity, wet grinding, and dispersion.

Zirconium Silicate Grinding Media

Description

High Grinding Efficiency

Grinding and dispersing efficiency are significantly improved owing to the beads’ possession of higher kinetic energy created by their big specific gravity. In the course of grinding, as a result, outlet speed and flow rate increase while circulation time as well as required grinding time drops. You will have both finished products with desired fineness and improved productivity.

  • High density, high tenacity, impact resistance, and low wear.
  • The advantage of its superior wear-resistance is highlighted especially in grinding of products with high precision and high solid content.
  • Highly stable chemical properties, and corrosion resistance, make it applicable as both acid and alkaline media.
  • A smooth surface makes cleaning easy work.
  • Far less wear will take place to mechanical equipment.

Operation Suggestions

Zirconium Silicate Grinding Media Operation Instruction

  • Clean the Mill chamber before charging with the beads.
  • Select beads of appropriate specifications according to the Mill volume, slurry viscosity and outlet clearance.
  • Test if the slurry viscosity meets requirements and checks if the machine’s outlet clearance and rotation speed are appropriate.
  • In the first use of the beads, it is recommended to pre-grind the beads in f fluid mix (resin and solvent) of certain viscosity for 30 minutes. When the low-viscosity solvent is employed for pre-grinding, it is required to reduce the rotation speed and limit the duration to 15 minutes. (Note: Beads labeled as “pre-ground” need no pre-grinding during operation.)
  • For low viscosity slurry, dispersion disc peripheral speed should not exceed 14m/s.
  • Due to the high kinetic energy of the beads, it is not necessary to operate at high rotation speeds to disperse high-solid-content and high-viscosity products.
  • For paint grinding, it is suggested resin should be used to clean the beads. If the Solvent is required for that purpose, reduce the rotation speed and have the cleaning done within 10 minutes. Intermittent cleaning operation “On-Off” is recommended.

Adding Zirconium Silicate Grinding Media Beads

  • An extremely small number of ceramic beads would be broken by high-speed impacts after a long time of grinding. It is required to make up the bead load at regular times.
  • Sieve out and weigh the broken beads, then add fresh ones of the same weight.
  • An additional quantity of beads should be loaded for prolonged grinding time if the desired fineness of the finished product remains unchanged.
  • In case the finished product should not meet the required fineness within a prescribed period of time, an additional quantity of beads should be needed.

Recommended Ball Charge

Chamber Volume (L) Sealed Mill (kg) Open Mill (kg)
Horizontal Vertical Vertical
8 15-16 13-15 11-13
15 28-29 24-28 21-24
30 55-59 48-55 41-48
45 83-88 72-83 62-72
60 110-117 97-110 83-97
115 212-225 185-212 159-185
225 414-440 362-414 310-362

Note of Zirconium Silicate Grinding Media

  • Mills of sealed type should not be overloaded lest the machine and the beads are damaged.
  • Mills of open type should be optimally loaded with the beads. In case of unsmooth running, reduce the bead charge gradually.
  • The bead charge shall be 80-85% for sealed horizontal, 70-80% for sealed vertical, and 60-75% for open types Mills.

Bead Size Selection of Zirconium Silicate Grinding Media

Following conditions shall be taken into account in bead size selection:

  • Nature of solid component of slurry.
  • The viscosity of the slurry.
  • The particle size of pigments to be ground or dispersed, desired fineness of finished products.
  • Specification of outlet clearance of the Mill machine or the filter screen, generally, the size of the smallest beads should be at least twice that of the separator screen or rotating gap separator.
  • The distance between the outer edge of the dispersion disc and the grinding chamber should be four times the diameter of the largest bead.

Surface Treatment of Zirconium Silicate Grinding Media

1. Mold cleaning

2. Burring, polishing, buffing

3. Cleaning of non-ferrous alloy, stainless steel, and plastic parts

4. Releasing of welding stress

5. Mechanical polishing

6. Processing after coating

Zirconia ceramic beads produced under the electrofusion process feature the following characteristics:

  • Strength equals that of steel beads, stronger than glass beads.
  • Enough and appropriate plastic metallic depth.
  • Low broken rate...
  • Even-distributed surface roughness.
  • Free of dust contamination.
  • Dispense with further dirt elimination treatment to stainless steel and alloy of nonferrous metal. Mainly applied to pre-stressing processing in the space-flight industry, suitable for application in compressed air jet machines, irrespective of wet or dry process. Also applicable in surface treatment in turbo systems, such as cleaning, polishing and burring, etc…
